Why Mental Health Nurses Choose Verus People
Mental health nursing can look very different from one service to the next. An acute inpatient role, a community case management contract, and a regional crisis response placement all require different experience, confidence, and support.
That’s why our process starts with understanding your background, preferred setting, location goals, and the kind of work you want to do next. From there, we help you assess suitable opportunities, manage compliance requirements, and stay supported throughout your placement.
Our team can talk you through current contracts, locations, rates, and what each placement involves.

Life as a Mental Health Nurse

David
Mental Health Nurse
Over the past three years, working with Verus People with contracts in Victoria and South Australia. As a mental health nurse, I have felt consistently supported, valued, and respected both professionally and personally. The agency has always demonstrated a genuine commitment to high-quality care, strong communication, and staff wellbeing. Down time is always great fun catching up with colleagues for social gatherings and allowing lots of time for leisure pursuits – camping and kayaking.
Verus People has provided flexible opportunities, responsive support, and a professional approach that has allowed me to deliver the best possible outcomes for clients while continuing to grow in my role. I would highly recommend Verus People as a niche agency to both healthcare professionals and organisations seeking compassionate, reliable, and skilled mental health staff. My only regret is that I did not take the agency leap years ago.

FAQs About Mental Health Nursing
What do I need to apply?
You will need a valid AHPRA, specified mental health experience & the willingness to complete our Mandatory Onboarding Requirements.
How long are the contracts?
Most mental health nursing contracts are 12 weeks in length. This is generally preferred within mental health settings, as it supports continuity of care and allows nurses to follow patients through different stages of treatment and recovery.
Some clients are open to shorter 4–8 week contracts, although these opportunities are more limited. If you're looking for a shorter placement, reach out to our team to discuss current options.
How long does it take to find a contract?
We generally recommend allowing around 4–6 weeks before you’re hoping to start a contract to start reaching out to an agency.
This gives you enough time to complete the compliance and onboarding process, including:
• References
• Statements of service
• Vaccination evidence
• Mandatory training
• Police checks
• Working With Children Checks
• Client-specific paperwork
Some clients require more documentation upfront than others, so it’s always best to start the process early.
In terms of vacancies, most clients notify us of available roles 1–2 weeks before the start date, in some cases we get a month’s notice.
Because rural and remote contracts can move quickly, nurses who already have their compliance organised are often able to secure contracts more successfully. Having your onboarding completed means we can submit you immediately for the roles you’re most interested in.
If you're thinking about travelling or starting agency work in the near future, we recommend reaching out to the team early so we can help get everything organised ahead of time.
Where are your contracts located?
We work across five state tenders and offer mental health nursing contracts throughout:
• Western Australia
• South Australia
• Queensland
• New South Wales
• Tasmania
• Northern Territory
• Victoria
Can I choose where I go?
Absolutely.
We work with mental health services across multiple states and locations throughout Australia, and we always aim to prioritise your preferences where possible.
Whether you’re looking for:
• A coastal location
• Rural or remote experience
• Warmer weather
• Higher-paying contracts
• Community mental health
• Inpatient contracts
• Specific states or towns
We’ll work closely with you to find opportunities that align with your goals and lifestyle.
That said, flexibility does make a big difference in agency work. Nurses who are open to a broader range of locations, start dates, and contract types will generally have access to more opportunities and often secure contracts more successfully.
Can I travel with a friend or partner?
Travelling with a friend or partner isn’t unheard of, although it can be tricky to line up contracts at the same location and within the same timeframe.
We do occasionally have opportunities where this works well, particularly in larger facilities or locations with multiple vacancies. Being flexible with locations and timing can significantly improve the chances of finding suitable contracts together or close by.
If this is something you’re interested in, we recommend reaching out to the team early so we can discuss suitable options and timing.
What travel and accommodation is included?
For most rural and remote contracts, we cover travel to and from your placement within Australia at the beginning and end of your contract.
Accommodation is usually provided and is commonly shared housing with other agency staff. Nurses always have their own private bedroom, kitchens, and living spaces may be shared depending on the location. Some include private ensuites others are shared bathrooms.
In some locations where on-site accommodation is unavailable, clients may offer accommodation allowances instead. These placements can be ideal for nurses wanting:
• Pet-friendly accommodation
• More privacy
• Accommodation suitable for partners
• Space for caravans or camper setups
Please reach out to the team if you’d like more information about accommodation options for specific contracts.
Which specialities within Mental Health do you get contracts in?
As we work with mostly rural and remote clients, we work with a lot more:
• Community Case Management
• Crisis Assessment / Triage Roles
• Inpatient Mental Health
• Child & Youth Mental Health
• Forensic Mental Health
• Older Persons Mental Health
• Alcohol & Other Drugs
• Psych Liaison
If you work in another mental health speciality, please don’t be afraid to get in touch as there may be additional opportunities.
How much experience do I need?
For inpatient mental health contracts, we generally require a minimum of 2 years’ mental health nursing experience.
For community mental health, crisis teams, and other speciality roles, we typically look for nurses with:
• 2+ years of specific community or crisis experience
• Strong autonomy and assessment skills
• Confidence working independently
Some clients are open to more junior community/ crisis nurses or those transitioning from inpatient into community mental health.
Other clients require more specified experience e.g. some specialist crisis assessment roles may require 5+ years’ experience in that setting due to the senior level of responsibility involved & the fast paced nature of the role.
Requirements can vary significantly between facilities, so we encourage nurses to reach out to discuss individual opportunities.
Do I need a postgraduate qualification in mental health?
Not always.
While some facilities prefer or encourage postgraduate qualifications in mental health nursing, most clients place greater value on practical clinical experience.
Some contracts may also include qualification allowances for nurses with:
• Mental Health postgraduates
• Masters qualifications
What are the pay rates like?
Pay rates vary significantly between states, locations, and role types.
Each state has different grading systems, so titles and classifications don’t always translate directly. For example, a Grade 3 nurse in Victoria may align with a Clinical Nurse Level 6 role in Queensland.
Generally speaking:
• The more rural or remote the location, the higher the pay rates tend to be
• Western Australia and the Northern Territory are often some of the highest-paying states for mental health contracts
As a general guide:
• Inpatient mental health roles are typically paid at Registered Nurse level
• Community, Crisis, Child and Youth, Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD), and Specialist mental health roles are often paid at higher Clinical Nurse or CNC rates
We recommend checking our job board for current advertised rates, or reaching out to our team for a personalised discussion around current market rates and locations.
What additional benefits do Verus nurses receive?
At Verus People, we offer a range of additional benefits for our nurses, including:
• $500 annual education allowance for courses or conferences
• Refer-a-friend bonuses with $250 referral incentives
• Salary packaging benefits to help significantly increase take home pay
• Dedicated consultant support throughout your contract journey from your recruitment consultant, compliance consultant and travel consultant.
We strongly encourage our nurses to take advantage of the education allowance each year to continue building their skills and professional development.
What support do I receive while on contract?
Our clients are generally looking for experienced mental health nurses who can work independently and adapt quickly to new environments.
While you’ll receive an induction and handover from the facility, most contracts do require nurses who are confident working autonomously.
That said, support is a huge part of what we do.
At Verus People, you’ll have support from multiple areas throughout your contract journey, including:
Your Recruitment Consultant
Your consultant will:
• Check in with you regularly throughout your contract
• Help prepare you before you start
• Talk you through the role and location
• Coordinate communication with the client
• Support you with extensions or future contracts
Whenever possible, we also arrange a call with the client before you begin, so both sides can get a feel for the role, team, and expectations ahead of time.
Compliance Support
Our compliance team assists with:
• Onboarding paperwork & Questions
• Mandatory training requirements
• Vaccination evidence
• References and documentation
• Client-specific requirements
Travel Support
We also have a dedicated travel consultant who can organise:
• Flights
• Travel bookings
• Travel itineraries
If you drive to your contract, petrol reimbursement is also available.
Can I extend my contract?
Yes, contract extensions are very common in mental health agency work.
If you’re enjoying the role, fitting in well with the team, and the client still requires support, there’s a strong chance they may offer an extension.
We work with many agency nurses who do back to back contract work around different locations & often return to facilities they’ve had positive experiences with in the past when contracts open up there again.
What shifts will I work?
This depends on the type of mental health contract.
Inpatient Mental Health
Most inpatient contracts involve a rotating roster across Monday–Sunday, including a mix of:
• Morning shifts
• Afternoon shifts
• Night duties
• Weekend work
Community Mental Health
Community and case management roles are generally:
• Monday to Friday
• Standard clinic hours
• Approximately 8:00am – 4:30pm
Crisis, Triage & Acute Care Teams
These roles can vary depending on the service.
Some are standard Monday–Friday clinic hours, while others involve rotating rosters including:
• AM & PM shifts
• Full 24/7 roster
These contracts are often paid at higher Clinical Nurse or CNC rates, with additional penalty rates applicable for shift work and rotating rosters.
Every facility operates a little differently, so we encourage nurses to chat with the team about the specifics of each role.
Do you only offer rural and remote contracts?
The majority of our mental health contracts are within rural and remote services across Australia.
These locations often offer:
• Higher pay rates
• Accommodation provided
• Travel included
• Valuable clinical experience
• Strong team environments
We also work with some metro and regional services, particularly within:
• Perth
• Darwin
• Hobart
alongside a range of regional towns and remote communities throughout the country.
Do you offer senior or management roles?
These roles don’t tend to be advertised as commonly, but we always love to hear from these type of candidates.
Do I need a car?
This depends on the location and the specific contract.
Some rural and remote placements do require a car for getting to and from work or around town. Other contracts include accommodation within walking distance to the hospital and local amenities such as supermarkets, cafes.
There are flexible options available, and our team can help guide you toward placements that suit your lifestyle and travel preferences.
Not sure what role suits you yet?
That’s okay. Finding the right mental health nursing role can take a conversation, not just a job search.
Our team can help you compare options, understand what different placements involve,
and decide what feels right for you.
